CALOR gas users in Bishop Auckland have been supporting hospice patients by returning their unwanted empties.
Spoors, in Railway Street, encouraged people to return their used gas cylinders and gave £5 to the Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland for each one.
The company was one of four Calor centres taking part in the initiative and collected 69, the largest total. A poster campaign advertised their efforts.
Mike Williams, manager of Spoors, said: "We were aware that many people had unwanted cylinders in the garages and sheds that they did not use anymore.
"This campaign was identified as a way of helping people to dispose of their cylinders and help a worthy cause at the same time.
"I'm delighted with the response from the people of Bishop Auckland, and I am sure the Butterwick Hospice is pleased with the donation."
