MICHAEL Proctor has his sights on the perfect Christmas present - a place in the Sunderland starting line-up.

The home-grown striker was the Black Cats' hero on Saturday, coming off the bench to net a late winner against Wimbledon.

And with Mick McCarthy's strikers failing to make any impression on the scoring charts this season, Proctor is desperate for a run in the side after spending the majority of the season on the bench..

He admitted: "It was a great relief to get off the mark and a great relief for the lads to get the win that has eluded us for a little while.

"There has been a bit of pressure on us because the results haven't been what anyone wanted and we've drawn too many games.

"It's typical that we should get that win and not play as well as we can, but we'll take it and hope we can get on a run now.''

Proctor added: "Strikers sometimes get goals in batches and I'd like nothing more than to be in the team against Bradford on Boxing Day and score again.

"I've been in and out of the team this season but I've not complained and decided the best thing I could do was work hard in training and in the reserves.

"It is good to go into Christmas on the back of a win and, hopefully, we can send the fans home happy on Boxing Day."

Friday's game with Bradford at the Stadium of Light sees former crowd favourite Nicky Summerbee's first return since his departure in January 2001 after falling out of favour with Peter Reid.

Summerbee made 109 appearances on Wearside and was an integral part of the side which won the Division One title.

He said: "It was a big part of my career. They'd just moved to a new stadium and although we didn't go up in the first year, we did in the second.

"It put my career back on track and gave me a high profile.

"The way that Peter Reid wanted to play suited me - he just wanted me to get balls into the box for Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips.

"You had Allan Johnston on the left and he was doing the same thing - although probably with a bit more skill and flair than I was!''

And he added: "I haven't a clue what kind of reception I will get. I've spoken to a few of my mates who used to play there and they've been back and had a good reception.

"It would be nice to go there, see the old lads still there and come back with three points.

"I don't think there's any reason why we can't because I don't think they are as good as they thought they might be pre-season.''

Meanwhile, on-loan Alan Quinn is likely to return to Sheffield Wednesday when his loan period expires.

Owls' boss Chris Turner has seen his side slip to 17th in Division Two and although McCarthy would like to hang on to him, Turner said: "I spoke to Alan on Friday. Nothing is definite but I would say that it is more probable than possible that Alan will return."
