FRIENDS and family gathered yesterday to celebrate the life of David Snell, who lost his brave battle against cancer last week.
The Salvation Army Centre, in Cross Street, Shildon, was packed with those wishing to pay tribute to a man who became an inspiration to the community.
Mr Snell, 59, who lived with wife, Joyce, in Redworth Road, Shildon, was well-loved and respected by people from all walks of life.
A keen member of the Salvation Army, he was a former deputy headteacher at Willington Primary School and later headteacher of Henknowle Primary School, in Bishop Auckland, now St Andrew's Primary School. He was also chairman of New Shildon Residents' Association.
Bishop Auckland MP Derek Foster, who attended his funeral yesterday, said Mr Snell would be greatly missed and was held in high regard.
He said: "I have come to know him quite well over the years. David made a major contribution to both the school and the community which he served."
Major Stephen Naylor paid tribute to a man who was an inspiration to those who knew him.
During his illness, Mr Snell worked tirelessly to support the Shildon Salvation Army Corps, raising £1,155 last year when he completed the Great North Run. His battle inspired his son, Jeff, to cycle around Britain to raise £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Mr Snell leaves his wife, sons Jeff and Nathaniel, daughter Miriam, son-in-law David and daughter-in-law Fiona.
