AN escaped prisoner was last night back in prison after being found at a home in Crook, near Bishop Auckland.
Kathleen Burtle was arrested after tricking her way into the home of an elderly couple by telling them she was from the council tax department.
Although the couple, aged 88 and 90, let her into their home, Burtle left empty-handed after they became wise to her deception.
Police in Crook said that their inquiries led to Burtle's arrest at an address in the town on Wednesday.
She had been on the run from Askham Grange Prison, in York, since November 3, where she was serving a sentence for deception burglary.
Her arrest has prompted police to renew warnings to people to be cautious with callers to their homes.
Inspector George Ledger said: "I would urge people to be vigilant and always check callers' identification before letting them into your home.''
