MORE than 2,000 needy people in Darlington will get Christmas gifts this year thanks to a charity appeal.
The annual Giving Tree Appeal, organised by Darlington Borough Council's social services department, has involved more local businesses than ever before - and more schools, churches and community groups have helped raise funds and collect gifts.
Councillor Bill Dixon, the council's cabinet member for social services, said: "It never ceases to amaze me how this appeal grows from strength-to-strength. The people of Darlington and beyond have warmed to the Giving Tree Appeal over the past seven years, and without their support and that of local businesses it would not be the success it is."
Staff gave up their time over the weekend to help sort and pack the presents, which are being distributed across Darlington.
