PEOPLE in Darlington are being reminded not to leave presents under the Christmas tree this week.
Darlington's community safety partnership is providing advice to people to help them stay safe over the Christmas and New Year.
The partnership between Darlington Borough Council and police is advising residents to use electric timers on lights and radios to deter burglars.
People are also being advised not to leave gifts under Christmas trees where they can be seen from outside, and are a temptation to opportunist thieves.
A spokeswoman said: "At this time of year criminals know that many people have a number of new, expensive items in their homes. Record serial numbers on presents as soon as you buy or receive them. And effective property marking can reduce the risk of it being stolen as it is harder to dispose of."
