REAL ale enthusiasts have been urged to lend a hand or risk the loss of a popular event on the traditional beer drinking calendar.

The Durham Beer Festival returned to its traditional home in August, following several years at smaller pub venues across the city.

More than 60 beers were on offer during the three days of the 23rd festival, which was held at the Durham Students' Union building, Dunelm House, in New Elvet.

Organisers from the Durham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) said the event had been a big success.

Sponsored by Durham Brewery, in Bowburn, it attracted hundreds of real ale enthusiasts from across the region at each session, ensuring most barrels were polished off.

While hoping to repeat the festival on a similar size next year, Camra officials in Durham said the future viability of the event depended on volunteer support.

Branch chairman Ken Weaver said: "A small group of hard-working volunteers ensured the event was a success and their efforts before, during and after are greatly appreciated.

"But, the simple fact is that we cannot repeat the festival without more help.

"Ideally, we need double the staff available.

"The message is quite clear - we will do it again, but only with sufficient volunteers," he said.

"It would be a shame to lose out on what can be a top showcase for the brewing industry."

Mr Weaver urged any potential volunteers to contact either himself or any of the other branch officials.

All are welcome to the next Camra branch meetings, at The Lambton Hounds pub in Pity Me, on Wednesday, January 14, or the Woodman Inn, in Claypath, on Wednesday, February 18, both starting at 8pm.
