A COLLEGE has launched a series of ten-week taster courses in engineering for women.
The courses at Derwentside College, which are free of charge, cover a number of engineering areas, including computer-aided design, decorative metalwork, welding and electrical appreciation.
The courses have been funded by the Learning and Skills Council to address gender issues and to assist with the recruitment of non-traditional learners to specific curriculum areas.
College marketing and recruitment manager Susan Errington, said: "These courses have been specifically designed for women and offer a range of experiences in the field of engineering.
"Women can do these courses as a hobby or for further progression on to an accredited study programme.
"There are a great number of engineering opportunities in this area and many may want to begin or develop existing skills with a view to gaining employment."
She said the college's Centre of Engineering Enterprise ensured that students would train in excellent workshop facilities, with the most up-to-date equipment.
It is hoped that these taster initiatives will encourage more women to progress to accredited engineering programmes. Those that want to continue their studies will receive free tuition.
Jan Gray, from Lanchester, said: "I have enrolled on the electrical appreciation for women course. I have always been interested in electrics and I am sure this course will give me a lot more knowledge and insight.
"Being a single parent and knowing more about electrics will certainly boost my confidence in the home."
The courses start from January 26. For more information contact (01207) 585900.
