THE latest fad for motorised scooters is proving a headache for police.
Forces across the region say the devices have prompted scores of complaints and fears of accidents.
Numerous complaints about youngsters on scooters have been received by police in Darlington after the vehicles were given as Christmas presents.
Worried residents in the town contacted police on Boxing Day, concerned about youngsters riding scooters on roads and pavements.
Police are urging parents to make sure the scooters are ridden on private land, rather than public roads, warning that because they have engines they are considered to be a vehicle, which should be taxed, tested and insured.
A spokesman for Durham Police said: "Parents could be in for a nasty shock if they let children use them on the public highway."
The North Yorkshire force added: "These scooters aren't toys."
