A SOIL conditioner produced from compost is proving popular with gardeners.
GrowGreen will soon be sold at every public household waste site in North Yorkshire following the success of a trial scheme.
Yorwaste, which took over responsibility for waste management from North Yorkshire County Council ten years ago, produces GrowGreen from garden waste.
Its pilot sale took place at household waste sites in Ripon; Sowerby, Thirsk; Yafforth Road, Northallerton; Foss Islands, York; Towthrope, Strensall; Selby and Tadcaster.
Now, the firm aims to sell it from its remaining sites in time for the spring growing season.
GrowGreen is produced when garden waste taken to managed sites by the public is transported to a composting centre for shredding.
The waste is also turned on a regular basis to ensure the high temperatures needed for composting.
Meanwhile, the company has reported that more than 1,000 tonnes of green waste has been diverted away from landfill sites in the Craven district.
Residents were issued with green waste collection bins earlier this year
Contents of the bins are composted and mixed with topsoil to form material which can be used to restore landfill areas.
The scheme ended in November but is hoped to restart shortly.
Already, Yorwaste is sending thousands of tonnes of green waste to a consortium which manufactures green compost on a national scale for use as a peat alternative.
