A POPULAR countryside path that has been severely eroded is to get a 600-tonne make-over in the New Year.
Work will start on the section of path in need of repair, known as Sandy Lane, in Errington Woods, New Marske on Monday, and last until the end of the month. The public is being asked to stay away from the area during the closure period.
There will be an alternative route for walkers in the adjacent field known as Soapwell Field, but there will be no alternative for cyclists or horse-riders.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's access officer Emma Daniel said: "There's a simple reason for the erosion of the path - it's been caused by excessive use. It's a very popular route."
More than 600 tonnes of stone will be used for the repairs.
Letters have been sent to local stables and liveries explaining they must stay away during January.
A second piece of repair work will take place in February - with the bridleway to the Old Coastguard Cottages, at the back of the Ship Inn, closed for three weeks from Monday, February 16.
