A YOUNG ice hockey star has been called-up to play for his country but is hoping a Father Christmas-type figure will come forward to help make his dreams come true.

Twelve-year-old Andrew Finn was handed an early Christmas present after being selected to represent England at a prestigious international tournament but he is now desperate to receive some festive generosity.

The competition - called the PeeWee International Tournament and to be held early this year in Quebec, Canada - will mark Andrew's competitive international debut having already played in a series of friendlies but the honour of being selected for his country is tarnished slightly by the financial cost the callup brings.

Andrew, who plays for Billingham Bombers under-14s, and his family must foot the bill for his own flights and accommodation while, in stark contrast to internationals in other sports, he is also expected to provide his own kit.

Flights alone will cost almost £500 while the playing kit, tracksuit and England jacket come to another £200 and although Andrew's proud family are desperate to see their son make his international bow and have vowed to make the trip to Canada in February, the cost is taking it's toll.

Andrew and his father Steven already spend considerable time and money travelling the country to attend England training sessions and friendly matches in Milton Keynes and Nottingham, while the family even attempted to cancel a dream holiday to Florida but were told they would not be refunded their full payment.

Andrew, of Darlington, said: "I would appreciate any level of sponsorship as every little helps."
