PHOTOGRAPHS from Romania show how medicines sent by North-Easterners have allowed a girl to sit up for the first time since she suffered serious burns.

Mariana Nechitescu, seven, was doused in petrol and set on fire, allegedly by thugs, after her father refused to ignore the theft of timber.

Mariana improved but remains critical, and Stockton charity Convoy Aid is fighting to bring her to Britain for treatment.

Convoy Aid founder Rod Jones, 55, has helped raise more than £7,000 to bring her to the UK. However, £3,000 has been spent on sending medicines to Romania.

Mr Jones hopes to bring Mariana, who suffered 85 per cent burns, to Britain this month for treatment.

He is asking for someone to accommodate Mariana and her mother for two months.

All costs would be paid for.

* The charity is also asking for anyone with a tractor they no longer need to come forward. The tractor would be used to sow crops in Romania. Anyone who can help can call the charity on (01642) 613106.
