A WOMAN has suffered serious injuries after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver.
The accident happened at about 2.30am on New Year's Day as the 23-year-old made her way home with friends.
They were walking along the pavement on Spa Well Road, Winlaton, Gateshead, when an Audi TT car travelling south came round a bend, lost control and mounted the kerb.
It struck the woman, flinging her into the northbound carriageway of the road, but the driver did not stop.
The victim was treated by paramedics for head and facial injuries and was last night recovering in Newcastle General Hospital.
The road was closed for three hours while accident investigators examined the scene.
Detectives arrested a man but released him on police bail, pending further inquiries.
Witnesses are asked to call police on 0191-563 3774.
