DELAYS are expected tomorrow as repairs begin on a main route in and out of Tyneside.

Contractors are scheduled to start urgent work to replace crash barriers on the A167 Gateshead flyover.

About 1,000 metres of corroded steel parapets, designed to prevent vehicles from leaving elevated sections of road, will be replaced in the coming months. The work will require the closure of lanes and some slip roads.

The first stretch of the road to be affected will be the southbound exit slip road on to the A184 Sunderland Road roundabout, which will close for about three weeks from tomorrow.

The northbound entry slip road will close next, then the remainder of the parapet will be tackled under lane closures only. The work is scheduled for completion by the end of March.

Signs warning motorists of possible delays have been on display since December and drivers are asked to find alternative routes wherever possible.
