A SUPERBIKE could become the latest weapon used by police to catch crooks.
The bike, made by a leading manufacturer to the specifications of a Teesside traffic officer, can switch from conventional road patrol to cross country chases.
It could be used by Cleveland Policeto round up vandals and youths on trial bikes who pose a threat to public safety on playing fields and footpaths.
The idea came to motorbike enthusiast Sergeant Joe Jessop, of the force's road policing unit, when he asked a showroom assistant whether a bike on display could be adapted for off-road police use.
Manufacturer Honda used specifications set down by Sgt Jessop, who said the finished product has great potential.
Exclusively tested by Cleveland Police for on and off-road use, the 650cc bike has won the interest of other UK police forces.
Sgt Jessop said: "When I looked at complaints in our area, the majority involved school fields and urban areas. This bike may be a better option than what we have at present."
