Skipper Neil Maddison could not believe he ended up on the losing side on Saturday.
As Quakers' dismal away run continued in the capital, so did their miserable luck in front of goal - David Hodgson's men squandered a whole host of opportunities at Brisbane Road.
March 22 was the last time Quakers won on their league travels and not since 1966 have they been victorious at Orient.
Strikers Barry Conlon and Lee Matthews were both guilty of misses and they were made to pay as Ciaran Toner's ninth minute opener proved decisive for the home side.
Maddison said: "The referee even said to us how did you not win that game?
"We had chance after chance to win the game comfortably and we get beat 1-0.
"Looking back at the chances we've had is just unbelievable.
"We can't keep going on like this. It's happened far too often lately and it's costing us points which we desperately need."
And Maddison, who succeeded Craig Liddle as club captain following the arrival of Hodgson in November, remains confident goals will soon come for Quakers, who remain three points adrift of third bottom Southend.
"We've got to stick together and keep our heads up because sooner or later it has got to drop," said Maddison.
"Once we start hitting the net and confidence comes I really do think we have got squad good enough to get out of trouble.
"People back in Darlington will see that we've got beat but if they'd came to the game will have seen just how one-sided it was. "It says it all when their manager has a go at his own players because he thought we were robbed."
