Darlington Building Society director David Dodd clearly is not content with run-of-the-mill New Year's resolutions.
For the 46-year-old, of Melsonby, near Richmond, has pledged to complete not one half-marathon this year, but 13, all to raise money for Darlington's St Teresa's Hospice.
The money he raises through his athletic efforts will go towards funding a six-bed, 24-hour respite, palliative and terminal care unit at the hospice.
Mr Dodd's challenge will begin on Sunday when he runs in the annual Morpeth to Newcastle race.
Further races have been lined up in Hull, York and Blackpool, as well as the Great North Run.
"Although the target mileage of 171 miles can appear daunting, I am really looking forward to completing this challenge," he said.
"In terms of sponsorship, I have already had a fantastic response from my Darlington Building Society colleagues, and I am hoping to attract corporate sponsorship as well as support from the general public in the region."
Hospice director Jane Bradshaw said: "I would like to thank David for his innovative idea to support the new unit. Thirteen half marathons in 12 months is a big challenge, but I know David is a keen runner and I am sure he will be successful. The new in patient unit is a key resource for the people of Darlington and the surrounding area. Everyone at St Teresa's Hospice will be cheering David on."
