AN inquest opens today into the death of a teenage girl who was involved in a car accident as she crossed a road outside her grandmother's home at the weekend.
Melanie Mullally suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, in Front Street, Broom Lane, at Broom Park, near Durham.
It is understood 16-year-old Melanie had just left her grandmother's house and was crossing Broom Lane to return to her home, less than a mile away in Skippers Meadow, Ushaw Moor.
Melanie, said to be a popular girl in the community, was an animal lover and was believed to be making her way home to take a neighbour's dog for a walk.
Inquest proceedings will open at a brief hearing at the office of North Durham Coroner Andrew Tweddle, in Crook, today.
The inquest will be adjourned pending the outcome of police investigations into the accident.
Anyone who witnessed the accident, involving a blue Vauxhall Nova car, at about 7.30pm on Saturday, is asked to call Durham Police on 0191-375 2159.
