Darlington Borough Council is facing its worst shortage of school crossing wardens for seven years.
Five people are urgently required to bring the team back to full strength, working in Haughton Road, Newton Lane, Grange Road, Coniscliffe Road and Stanhope Road.
The youngest lollipop person working in Darlington is 30, and volunteers can be aged up to 75. They work seven-and-a-half hours and are paid £35 a week.
A council spokesman said: "There doesn't appear to be any for reason, we simply just don't have any people coming forward."
