TRAINS were delayed and a road closed after a lorry carrying a skip became wedged under a railway bridge yesterday.
The incident happened at about 9.15am in Hilda Place, Saltburn, east Cleveland, which is a main route taken by traffic through to the town's seafront.
The lorry, which was carrying a skip at the time, became lodged under the 12ft 9in bridge.
Police said the driver was slightly injured, but did not require medical attention.
Train services between Saltburn and Redcar were disrupted for nearly an hour.
Workers from engineering company Jarvis were called in to check on the alignment of the rails.
A spokesman for Jarvis said: "We have to do checks on the rails after any bridge bash, and train services are stopped until we can be sure everything is safe.
"We checked the rails were safe and checked the rail quality was still good, so that people passing over the bridge on a train do not spill their coffee."
The rail lines were reopened at 10.17am after the lorry was moved from under the bridge, and train services were resumed.
