POLICE have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a 55-year-old man on New Year's Day.
Former postman John Wells of Doncaster Road, Sandyford, Newcastle, was found bleeding to death from a stab wound to his neck at 8.38pm after he had bought bottles of beer from the Punch Bowl pub, in Jesmond Road.
Police confirmed last night they were questioning a 22-year-old Tyneside man in connection with the murder.
Detectives are still appealing for witnesses to come forward and are particularly keen to trace two people believed to be in the area on the night of the attack.
A black estate car was driven from a layby in Sandyford Road. They also still want to trace a man who was in the area around the time of the attack, walking across Goldspink Lane at its junction with Sandyford Road, towards Jesmond Road.
He is described being aged about 23, about 5ft 6in and was wearing round-rimmed glasses and a hat.
Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 0191-214 6555, ext 62833.
