Norton and Stockton Ancients: Norton Under-14s lost out in the quarter-final of Durham Cup to Consett Blackfyne Juniors.
In a well balanced game, played in good spirit, the away side just took the game with an extra time golden goal. Norton had started well with some good passing football, but they could not break down the well-organised Consett defence. They defended in numbers with their midfield getting behind the ball quickly, which acted to thwart the home side attack.
The game flowed from end-to-end with some good football from both teams. Consett found the same problems as Norton, with a solid Norton defensive line which was standing firm. The second half mirrored the first, both teams playing the ball around the pitch looking for an opening. Norton were unlucky to be pulled back for offside when Jonathan Rickard ran from behind the defence and was clear on goal.
With the game coming towards the end of normal time, Chris Edmonds pulled off a great save to take the game into extra time.
Within five minutes of the beginning of extra time, Consett broke through the middle of the home side's defence to claim the golden goal winner. Good luck to Consett in the next round and well played to both teams for a great cup tie.
Norton Under-15 Bs started this game with a Christmas hangover. Dormans took the game to Norton and deservedly went 1-0 up. Norton then came to life when a corner put in by Richard Johnson was hit on the half volley by Danny Wray into the roof of the net right on half time. Three changes early in the second half by Norton changed the game. Danny Wray got his second goal followed by one from John Shipley. Norton then fell asleep letting Dormans come back to 3-3. There were no goals in extra time although Norton did hit the bar but failed to score. Man of the match Chris Atkinson pulled off some quality saves to deny Dormans the win. Norton won the game on penalties with Chris Atkinson saving two.
Norton Under-11s progressed to the next round with a good 4-0 win against Hartlepool Crest. Baker sprinted away and chipped the keeper for the first goal. Steel then played a superb through ball for Turner to score and Hassan added a third with a brilliant curling shot. Sutcliffe lobbed the keeper for the fourth goal.
