Barnard Castle 5, Heighington 2: Heighington had booked a bus for the short journey to Barney intending to celebrate the New Year with a victory followed by a night on the town.
Unfortunately, no one had thought to inform the Barney lads of their plans and after Paul Kearton had hit the bar he put Barney ahead at the second attempt. Jos Lewandowski then carried the ball the length of the pitch before crossing for Ian Spence to fire home to give his side a 2-0 interval lead. The second half saw the lead increased to four as Lewandowski and Robert Fell got on the scoresheet, but Heighington finally woke up to the real purpose of their visit and pulled two back through Nigel Gamblin and Andrew Etherington. Fell added his second to extend his side's lead to three and Barney were then indebted to goalkeeper Daniel Pritchard, who on his return from injury produced several saves to protect his side's lead and earn his side's man of the match award. The losers' Stephen Odle earned a similar accolade.
Grey Horse 3, DGSOB 2
The clubs showed commendable enterprise to ensure this second round Darlington Charity Cup tie was played. Anticipating that Hundens Lane would be declared unplayable because of the bad weather, the tie was switched to Abbey Road. The game would appear to have been one of two distinct halves as in the first period Grey Horse raced into a three-goal lead courtesy of a brace from Darren Tate and one from Chirpy Caygill, while in the second half Old Boys pulled two back via two from Peter Grey. Grey Horse now face Hartlepool Chesters in the third round.
