A MAN was "left for dead" on the streets of Darlington after falling victim to a vicious gang attack.
Anthony Fletcher, 25, had been out drinking with his brother and a friend when they were targeted by a group of about 13 lads.
The attackers allegedly used iron bars and chains to beat the men, leaving Mr Fletcher with substantial bruising and needing staples in his head.
Six men have since been arrested in connection to the attack, one was released with no further questioning and five were released on bail.
The incident happened between 11pm and 11.30pm on Saturday, December 20, after Mr Fletcher's group had been drinking in their local pub The Turks Head, on Bondgate.
They left the pub around closing time and Mr Fletcher recalls being jumped on by the gang on the corner of Greenbank Road.
He said: "I was knocked out in the first three punches and left for dead on the street.
"If it hadn't been for my friend who wasn't so badly injured I don't know what would have happened."
They reported the attack to Darlington Police the following day and had their injuries treated at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
DC Grahame CORRECT Chapman, of Darlington CID, yesterday confirmed that six males, with ages ranging from 16 to 35 years, were arrested on Monday, December 22.
Officers are still likely to interview several other people about the attack.
DC Chapman said that it was a particularly nasty attack, with the victims' head injuries possibly caused by weapons, including iron bars and chains.
Witnesses to the attack are urged to call (01325) 467681.
