AARON HUGHES last night warned Manchester United that the Magpies won't suffer an inferiority complex when they visit Old Trafford tomorrow.
The Magpies have lost their last four matches against the Red Devils, conceding 16 goals in the process.
To add to that, Newcastle have only won once in 37 League trips to the Theatre of Dreams and Man. United currently sit comfortably at the top of the Premiership.
But Hughes insists Newcastle can come away from Manchester with all three points and strengthen their claims for a Champions League place at the same time.
"If you pressure them and weather the early storm it can be done," said the Northern Ireland international. "There's no question about that.
"If we don't concede early then we will always have a chance against them. We have got to be able to stand firm when they do put the pressure on us.
"We have got our own top players who can win the game. So by no means we will be going there as the second best team.
"On past results against them it may certainly look like that but we have got to be confident we can get all the points.
"We may not have won there for something like 32 years but you can't let that bother you."
Hughes has played in both of Newcastle's last two victories - against Leeds in midweek and at Southampton in the FA Cup last Saturday - and believes they have the talent within their ranks to overcome the champions.
But the 24-year-old concedes Sir Alex Ferguson's men are still the team to beat in the top-flight.
"I wouldn't say they have pulled away from us in terms of class, it's more a case of us not closing the gap. But we just have to keep working on it," he said.
"It's harder because everybody is trying to catch them, not just us. But we have to keep going.
"But Sunday will be a different matter and we have individuals that can change games, just as much as they have individuals that can change games. Games like this can come down to just one individual's brilliance.
"As a team they are the best in the country. They are sitting top of the pile at the minute and they have been the best club for a number of years."
Hughes, despite the availability of Andy Griffin after suspension, is likely to be handed the right-back role again tomorrow.
And that means a rare test against one of the finest left wingers in the world - Ryan Giggs.
"Everyone wishes Giggs was English in England," said Hughes. "He is the best in the country in that position. He frightens players when he runs at them.
"His all-round game is fantastic. He can do just about everything and is still young even though it seems like he's been around forever. I don't think I have ever come up against him directly. So it will be exciting if I'm selected."
But Hughes believes Man. United should be equally aware of threat of a certain Laurent Robert in a black and white shirt.
He said: "When Laurent is on form he is one of the best players in the league."
