A SHOP worker, who was engulfed in flames after fire tore through a County Durham furniture store on Friday, has died.

Nigel Peacey, 58, of Hartlepool, was rushed to hospital in critical condition after he was caught up in the blaze at Priory Pine, in West Auckland.

He died from his injuries in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Investigations were continuing this weekend into the cause of the fire, which started at about 4.30pm on Friday.

The 58-year-old man was engulfed in flames as he fled a burning workshop at a County Durham furniture store.

He was in Darlington Memorial Hospital last night in a critical condition suffering from 80 to 90 per cent burns. His family were at his bedside.

He died early this morning.

The cause of the blaze, at Priory Pine, in West Auckland, near Bishop Auckland, was unknown, but police and firefighters are expected to launch an investigation today.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were at the scene soon after the fire broke out, at about 4.30pm.
