SECURITY cameras could be installed on buses in Darlington after a series of vandal attacks that put drivers and passengers in danger.

The possible move comes after a spate of incidents in which missiles were thrown at Stagecoach and Arriva buses on Thursday.

Services carrying Carmel RC Technology College students were targeted and windows smashed, causing £400-worth of damage.

Now, bus operators are considering whether to install closed-circuit television cameras in vehicles on school routes.

Stagecoach's senior supervisor, Keith Goodfellow, said: "We don't have any plans to scrap services and those two incidents were the first in quite some time.

"We always get problems with children throwing stones at the buses all over the town, but we are looking at improving security by putting cameras on the buses."

The first incident happened at 4pm on Thursday, in Hammond Drive on the Skerne Park estate, when a window was broken.

The second was in Coombe Drive, on the Red Hall estate, when a stone was thrown at a bus window.

An Arriva bus was also targeted in Minors Crescent, Branksome, and one of its windows broken.

Security cameras have been installed on Arriva and Stagecoach buses, operating in Stockton and Hartlepool, after similar incidents.

Last year, police were called after youths threw a concrete block through the window of an Arriva bus as it travelled through Skerne Park estate.
