YOUNG musicians gathered together for the first time yesterday as an orchestra was launched.
The first rehearsal of Darlington and the Dales Youth Orchestra was held at Hurworth House School, near Darlington.
Thirty youngsters had the chance to play with professional musicians from the Northern Sinfonia.
The orchestra is being conducted by Chris Griffiths, who plays French horn with the Northern Sinfonia.
Yesterday's rehearsal saw youngsters tackling Mendelssohn's Fingals Cave overture, Haydn's Military symphony and a piece commissioned for the orchestra.
The orchestra is open to musicians who have their grade five examination or higher.
An eight-week course will be based at Elm Ridge Methodist Church, in Darlington. There are opportunities for string players to get involved.
Anyone who would like to apply for an audition is asked to contact Jacqui Inglis on (01325) 467814. Bursaries are available.
