David Hodgson will speak to Bristol City boss Danny Wilson this week with a view to extending Lee Matthews' stay with the club, writes Lee Hall.
The Middlesbrough-born striker is due to return to Ashton Gate this morning after his month-long loan came to an end after Saturday's home defeat at the hands of Hull City. Full-back Craig James returns to Sunderland today after a two-month stay at the Reynolds Arena.
And while James has turned down the chance of a third month, in favour of reserve-team football at the Stadium of Light, Hodgson is hopeful of tying down Matthews for another month.
Goal-shy Quakers have scored just once in their last six league games, which came courtesy of Matthews in a 1-1 draw at Carlisle at the end of December.
"I hope Lee can stay because we've got a little bit of continuity there and there's a little bit of understanding taking place," said Hodgson.
"I don't really want to disrupt it and hopefully we can keep hold of Lee.
"I've got to keep the momentum going with the players I have at the club." Both players are out of contract at the end of the season and it is understood that an unnamed club have made an approach for James, who made ten appearances for Quakers, scoring one goal.
"Craig has an opportunity to play at a higher level," said Hodgson.
"I've been delighted with Craig while he's been here, especially with his attacking play.
"He now feels it's best to return to Sunderland and play in the reserves."
Hodgson could make another loan signing this week. And providing the Quakers boss gets the green light to keep hold of Matthews, a midfielder is the most likely option.
With Clark Keltie sidelined for a fortnight with an ankle injury, Chris Hughes suspended for the trip to Kidderminster on Saturday and James returning to Sunderland, Hodgson's midfield options are limited.
Defender David McGurk should earn his first start since November at the Aggborough Stadium, in place of Joey Hutchinson, who serves a one-match ban.
Hutchinson was replaced by McGurk in the second half against Hull after limping off with a foot injury.
