THE public are being asked for their views on four new vehicle-free routes offering improved access to the countryside bordering Hartlepool.

A display outlining the shared-use bridleways will be held at the Central Library on York Road from tomorrow so people can make their views known.

It is part of an ongoing consultation process to gauge the level of support for the scheme, which also includes seeking comments from landowners, borough and parish councillors and other interested parties.

The scheme involves upgrading public footpaths into bridleways suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and disabled people.

The footpaths run from Summerhill to Dalton Piercy and on to Elwick or Brierton Lane as well as from Summerhill to Cowpen Bewley, near Billingham.

If the plans are approved, the work will be funded though Hartlepool Borough Council's Local Transport Plan (LTP) funding from the Government.

LTP co-ordinator Caine Spence said: "There are very few designated bridleways routes in Hartlepool, but there is a growing number of stables and riding schools. These vehicle-free routes will help ensure that horse riders, cyclists and walkers will be able to travel in safety."

The display will continue at the library until the end of the month. Visitors will be able to make their views known by filling in questionnaires. If anyone is unable to visit the display, further details are available on (01429) 284311.
