A MAN has appeared in court charged with a New Year's day murder.

John Wells, 55, died from a stab wound to the neck, as he walked home from his local pub.

He had been to the Punch Bowl in Jesmond Road, Newcastle to buy some beer from over the counter and was on his way home when he was attacked.

A couple walking home discovered him lying unconscious on the in Goldspink Lane in Sandyford. He died later that day in Newcastle General Hospital.

Adam Richardson, 22, of no fixed address, today appeared before Newcastle magistrates charged with his murder.

He also faces allegations of burglary and obtaining by deception.

He denied all the charges.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Newcastle Crown Court on Monday (January 19) for the murder and burglary charges. There was no application for bail, he will return to Newcastle Magistrates Court on March 8 to answer the obtaining by deception charge.
