A VILLAGE band, that is beginning to make a big noise in the North-East brass world is appealing for fresh blood to ensure it starts the competitive year on a high note.

Pittington Brass, which enjoyed a successful year in competition last year, would welcome new musical talent to bolster its ranks.

A decade after its formation the band's accolades last year included a third place finish in the Teesdale Brass Band Competition, winning the deportment category, while tenor horn Laura Brown was judged best soloist.

Band official Bob Robson urged all existing players and any would-be members to turn up when weekly practice resumes, on Thursday.

"Having celebrated our tenth anniversary last year the band is going from strength to strength and expect to improve on last year's achievements in the coming years.

"We would say to anyone interested in joining: 'Please come and meet us'.

"At the moment we are looking for front and back row cornets, in particular, but any player of other instruments would also be most welcome."

The band practises in the village hall, in Pittington, near Durham, on Thursdays from 7.30 to 9.30pm.
