STAFF at a rehoming centre are caring for a young dog that was left tied to its gates.

Darlington Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre staff have named the border collie-cross Loner.

He was taken to the centre in Sadberge, on Friday by a man who said he had found the dog in Sedgefield.

But the man left when he was told he would have to contact dog wardens in Sedgefield.

On his way out he left Loner at the gates.

"The man said he had picked the dog up as a stray, so it could be that Loner has owners who are very worried about him," said Sarah Sheeve, a spokeswoman for the centre.

"He was very smelly when we found him and he is still unsure and nervous, but it is early days."

Loner will not be available for rehoming for another five days, but anyone who recognises him is asked to call the centre on (01325) 333114.

Last month, The Northern Echo featured three dogs that were looking for new homes.

Unfortunately, suitable owners have yet to be found for 12-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Kerry, three-year-old border collie Suzie and a lurcher called Toffee.

The centre is open from noon to 4pm every day except Tuesdays.

Playful Zara still in need of a home

AN animal sanctuary is still looking for a home for an English bull terrier called Zara.

The dog was the subject of an appeal in The Northern Echo at the beginning of last month, but an owner has yet to be found.

Pauline Wilson, of the National Animal Sanctuary Support League, in Darlington, said: "Although they're not everyone's cup of tea, she's a lovely dog who loves to play."
