PEOPLE in Stockton are being urged to be on their guard when donating to charity.
Last weekend, Stockton Borough Council received complaints about unapproved people collecting in pubs in the town.
David Kitching, the council's trading standards and licensing manager, said: "There are many legitimate and thoroughly worthwhile collections but, sadly, we have seen an increase in activity where collections are not for charitable causes.
"Genuine fundraisers will be happy to answer questions and will not mind you checking them out.
"We should all ensure donations go to legitimate charities, to be used for their intended purposes, and not fraudsters to be used for their own ends."
Anyone concerned about the authenticity of a charity or collector is asked to telephone the Charity Commission's helpline on 0870 333 0123.
