Darlington Building Society director David Dodd isn't content with run-of-the-mill New Year's resolutions.
For the 46-year-old, of Melsonby, near Richmond, has pledged to complete 13 half marathons this year to raise money for Darlington St Teresa's Hospice.
The cash he raises will go towards a new six-bed, 24-hour respite, palliative and terminal care unit at the hospice.
Mr Dodd's challenge began on Sunday with the annual Morpeth to Newcastle race.
Further races have been lined up in Hull, York, Blackpool and the Great North Run.
He said: "Although the target mileage of 171 miles can appear daunting I am looking forward to completing this challenge."
"I have already had a fantastic response from my Darlington Building Society colleagues and I am hoping to attract corporate sponsorship as well as support from the general public in the region."
