DISABLED fishing enthusiasts have started an angling club and are seeking members.
The Leadgate Fishing Club for Disabled and Able-bodied Anglers was started by keen fisherman Dave Waters, of Leadgate, County Durham, after he was confined to a wheelchair three years ago.
He said: "I searched for a fishing club to cater for the disabled, but there were none in Derwentside, so I decided to set one up.
"We have disabled and able-bodied members, who are able to help those who are either confined to a wheelchair or have other disabilities.
"We are able to do fly fishing, trout fishing and will also be organising trips to the coast for sea fishing.
"The club has spare rods so we will also be able to offer lessons to people who have never fished before."
He said the club had received plenty of support from the owners of Aldin Grange Lakes, in Bearpark, Durham City, as well as from their bailiffs.
Club members also fish at the Grassholme and Derwent Reservoirs, Beamish Lakes, near Stanley, and on the Tyne.
They are hoping to go on a boat trip later this year.
Mr Waters said: "I find fishing very relaxing.
"It takes my mind off my disability and is a way of getting out of the house."
Anybody who is interested in joining can contact Mr Waters on (01207) 507887.
