TWO singing groups are taking to the stage in aid of a mayor's charity appeal.

Durham Mayor Councillor Ray Gibbon, from Witton Gilbert, is using his year in office to raise money for the Durham Volunteer Bureau in Millennium Place.

The former police officer is a volunteer with the Durham Citizens Advice Bureau.

Next Wednesday, the Durham Light Opera Group will perform with the Ormston Singers at the city's Gala theatre.

The Durham Light Opera Group, which was formed in 1976, has staged several Gilbert and Sullivan productions, and the group's programme for the night will draw heavily on their songs.

The Ormston Singers will cover a variety of styles, ranging from opera to modern musicals.

Their soloists will be some of the region's finest singers, including Kath Ireland, winner of several festivals, Dawn Furness, who won a Channel 4 opera competition, and young tenor John Rowland.

The singers' choral group will also be performing.

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5.

They are available from the Gala box office on 0191-332 4041.

l A race night for the mayor's appeal will be held by councillors George Hunter and Brian Kinghorn at the Abbey Indoor Bowling Club, Pity Me, on Saturday, February 7, at 7.30pm.

Tickets, priced £8, are available from Durham Tourist Information Centre or from the councillors.
