THE wife of a former Darlington school headteacher has died at the age of 99.
Gladys Adeline Tweddle died peacefully at Cold Springs Park in Penrith, Cumbria, on January 5, three months short of her 100th birthday.
She was married to Thomas Tweddle MBE for 60 years. Mr Tweddle, known as Tat, was headteacher of Gladstone Street Boys' School, which later became Central Secondary School, in Darlington, for 25 years.
The couple had a daughter, Diana Margaret, but she died in 1952 at the age of 16.
Mrs Tweddle and her husband, who was awarded an MBE for services to education, moved to Brompton, near Northallerton, where they lived until Mr Tweddle died in 1993 - two years after publishing his memoirs.
Following her husband's death, Mrs Tweddle went to live in Cumbria to be close to nieces Jean and Gwen Wilson.
Her funeral is being held on Monday. Friends are asked to meet for the service at Darlington Crematorium at 1.15pm. Flowers can be sent to Seaton Leng and Son Ltd in Bondgate, Darlington.
