A CRACKDOWN on fare evaders using the Tyne and Wear Metro system has been launched.
This week, teams of Metro ticket inspectors are throwing a cordon around selected stations on the network during rush hour.
People caught trying to travel without a ticket or valid pass could find themselves facing a court fine.
Metro operator Nexus admitted that the anti-fraud operation would cause hold-ups, but said the exercise was ultimately for the benefit of all Metro users.
Metro director Ken Mackay said: "We are absolutely determined to crack down on ticket fraud for the benefit of everyone who uses the Metro.
"This exercise is all part of our strategy to fight fraud, which helps keep fares down and ensures that the honest majority is not effectively paying for the free travel of the dishonest minority.
"Naturally, we regret any inconvenience the operation will cause, but we are confident that our passengers will agree with us that trying to eliminate ticket fraud is in the best interests of all."
The last operation takes place tomorrow between 7am and 9.30am.
