A KITCHEN worktop manufacturer is training almost 50 of its employees in information technology.
Wilsonart in Shildon, which also distributes laminates, has called on Optimum Services to Business at Bishop Auckland College to train its employees.
The trainees will be working towards a new information technology qualification funded by the National Learning and Skills Council, which replaces the NVQ.
The Government is aiming for 100,000 people annually to attain the computer qualification by 2006.
All levels of staff are involved with the onsite learning.
Wilsonart has a purpose-built computer training room which is available for shift workers 24 hours a day.
Employees take part in a two-hour session each week during company time and match it with their spare time.
Dale Alexander, managing director, said: "We started this to contribute to adult education, aligned to the work process.
"It benefits us as an organisation and even when not directly related to the job, it improves human capital.
"The scheme was open to everyone and already half of the workforce has signed up to take part."
