DOG walkers could soon be banned from taking their pets across village fields amid growing concern about fouling.

A minority of dog owners who fail to clean up after their animals while walking across the playing fields in Middleton St George have prompted parish councillors to take direct action.

At present, dogs are being allowed to run across the football pitch and near the children's play area. Concern is mounting for youngsters' health and safety as dog fouling is being left on the ground.

Parish councillors approved a proposal to obtain a bylaw through Darlington Borough Council to enforce a ban on dog walkers using the playing fields and enclosed play area.

Councillor Bill Oliver said: "There is plenty of other land about, we are not closing off the only land there is."

Notices will be going up encouraging walkers to keep their pets on leads and clean up after them.
