POLICE are investigating after a gang of youths broke a bus window narrowly missing a passenger.

The man was the only passenger on the Arriva bus at the Safeway stop, in Ingleby Barwick, at about 8pm on Tuesday, when it was attacked by four youths.

They had previously been told to get off the bus by the driver because they did not have tickets and they became abusive and threatening.

The driver turned the bus around and drove past the youths, one of whom then threw a stone and a window shattered, seconds after the passenger had moved seats.

Iain McInroy, operations director for Arriva North-East, said: "Arriva places safety at the heart of everything we do and I would urge anyone with information to contact the police so that those responsible can be caught and prosecuted."

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the incident and are investigating."
