A MOTHER and daughter who jointly run a Brownie pack aim to become world ambassadors for the Guides.
April Martin and her 20-year-old daughter Gemma, from Ripon, run the city's 2nd Brownie Pack and have been selected to join other members of the North Yorkshire West Guides on a 5,000-mile trip to the worldwide Guide Centre, in Mexico.
Dozens applied to make the memorable trip in August but only 12 girls and four leaders were selected from North Yorkshire for the challenging stay at the centre on the suburban fringes of Cuernavaca.
Applicants had to undergo a rigorous selection process, overcoming a series of challenges while demonstrating they could be good team members and ambassadors for Guiding.
Mrs Martin, who is deputy mayoress of Ripon, said: "The main aim of the trip is to explore the wider world, meet with other youngsters from around the world and understand some of the problems facing deprived youngsters in Mexico."
Each leader and Guide has to raise £1,500 for the trip before June 1.
Mrs Martin said: "Already the excitement about the trip is building and the youngsters involved are finding out about Mexico - some are even trying to learn the language. Others are exploring ways in which they can help the Mexican children.
"On their return they will pass on their experiences, give presentations to schools, clubs and other youth groups."
