STAFF at a children's centre have a problem - there are no youngsters to look after.
Kids Choice out-of-hours care centre opened three weeks ago in Leadgate, near Consett, and has 30 places. But so far it has only two children on its books.
Owner Jane Sidey, 27, who launched the venture with her friend, Anne-Marie Curtis, said: "It is baffling. I don't think a lot of people know we are here."
Ms Sidey, who lives in Leadgate, spent two years working to start the business, after realising through personal experience that there was little childcare available in Leadgate.
As a single mother working in Durham City, she struggled to find someone who could look after her son, Danny, who is now aged four.
"I was working in childcare in Durham and realised we needed something where I live," she said.
She has filled the club, at the Miners Hall in Watling Street, with play equipment and video games.
"We have got everything we need, except the children," she said.
A £38,000 grant from the New Opportunities Fund will guarantee the centre's survival for at least a year, as well as providing employment for three other members of staff.
"This is a business and we do charge people," said Ms Sidey.
"But a lot of mothers could benefit from this service and get back to work like I did."
