Wilton 1sts took good advantage of Division One leaders' Northumbria St George's weekend without a match, stealing top spot off of them, completing a fine double over third placed Richmond.
The Teessiders travelled to form team Richmond knowing a win would put them five points clear of first place and a point clear at the top, and they opened the game as if they meant business! A marvellous spell of possession hockey led to a powerful Dom Binks run, fiercely finishing past a stranded keeper. Mark Whitworth was unfortunate not to add a second when Richmond's keeper sailed across goal to parry a top corner shot. Richmond rallied and equalised just before the break, one of two speedy frontmen making a solo run and finishing.
The second half belonged to the home team, Wilton defending solidly, Wilton keeper Mark Morris and centre back Danny Morgan stopping everything. The match was won in the final minutes Wilton winning a penalty corner which Mark Whitworth clinically finished proving that quality in front of goal wins matches.
Wilton 3rds were also in action against Tynemouh 4th's at home. Wilton looked strong in the early stages and took the game to Tynemouth who didn't look as if they had turned up! Julian Barwick put in an excellent first half display netting an noteworthy brace, the first coming from a jinking run into the scoring circle rounded off by a clinical finish into the bottom corner, he grabbed his second after deflecting home after a piercing run from Andy Gray who is looking ever more confident at this level. In the second half with Tynemouth looked stronger, young man of the match Mark Pallister worked hard and both helped create and defend in Wilton's fight to hold onto the three points. Wilton unfortunately tired and before they knew it Tynemouth had brought themselves level to steal a point. Wilton will be disappointed that they couldn't hold on to the points but nevertheless before the game a point would have been accepted as a worthy result!
