Linx Hemlington 1 South Bank Utd 3: With Linx having wind advantage and the slope, South Bank United were pleased to go in at half time just trailing by a single goal scored by Mark Salvati.
Having gone close in the first half, United went all out from the start of the second period and deservedly got back on level terms when Anthony Gregory lobbed the Linx keeper from 20 yards. Anthony Reed then squared the ball for Gregory to put United in front and with two minutes remaining Gregory got his hat-trick. Mark Jahan was South Bank's man of the match marshalling a well organised defence that stood up well particularly in the first half.
British Steel Sports 2 Stokesley SC 2
Following an even opening half hour, Stokesley finally broke the ice when Michael Bulmer crossed for Neil Fawcett to tap in from close range but by half time it was all square when Jason Downing scored with a well struck free kick. Both sides went all out to find the back of the net and midway through the half, Richard Ford finished off a well worked move to put British Steel in front. The home sides joy was short lived however when Stokesley broke away five minutes later. Kevin Wilson scored with the help of the upright to give Stokesley a share of the points although it took two outstanding saves from Stokesley keeper Gary Cairns to prevent British Steel picking up their third win of the season.
St Mary's College OB 4 Coulby Newham FC 1
St. Mary's College turned in a totally different performance to the previous week against Stokesley, Dave Wesson controlling the midfield and Glen Bennett pulling the strings on the front. Wesson opened the scoring with a twenty yard effort on 15 minutes hanks to an assist from line St Marys dominated for long spells and only poor finishing in front of goal kept the scoreline respectable for Coulby Newham and St Mary's increased their lead when Steve Keenan beat his man and crossed from the bye line for Bennett to volley the ball into corner of the net. Even with a strong wind at their backs, Coulby were struggling to create any chances but were given a lifeline when an attempted clearance by College keeper Thomas Straker was blocked by a Coulby forward and the ball rebounded to give the onrushing Coulby forward the easiest of chances to score. In the second half with the wind at their backs, St Mary's continued to dominate with Coulby's offside game plan being broken on numerous occasions by the strong runs from the College midfield. Dave Aspery finally converted one of several chances after good interchange with Wally Kaid and the Mary's rounded off a fine performance when Bennett lashed the ball home from 30 yards.
Thornaby Village 0 Kings Head FC 4
A goal from Paul Smith was all that King's Head had to show for their domination of the first forty minutes at Thornaby. However, two second half goals from Paul Round, one a penalty, and a second from Smith gave the scoreline a truer reflection of the way that the game had gone. Such attacks that Thornaby Village mounted were easily coped with by the King's Head defence for whom Matty Swales turned in a man of the match performance.
North Riding Saturday Challenge
Cup round four
Staithes Ath. 3 Thornaby Mandale 6
Thornaby Mandale's defence of the North Riding Saturday Challenge Cup continued with a convincing win over Staithes Athletic although after Andrew Dyson had headed Mandale in front on ten minutes, Staithes hit back with two quick goals to go in front. In an end to end first half, Mandale levelled the scores when Kevin Legg beat two men before firing home and the cup holders finished on a high when Bradley Murray restored their lead on forty minutes. Staithes drew level for a second time when a thirty five yard effort flew into the back of the net but Mandale took control when Dyson completed a hat trick with two goals mid way through the second half. With Staithes pushing forward to try and get back into the game, Legg broke through to score his second and complete a fine Mandale that takes them into the last eight for the second year running.
Hawes 3 Woodman's Arms 4
Hawes needed extra time before winning. Woodies deservedly went ahead when Mark Jones slotted home. By half time it was 2-0 after Jones scored. Hawes themselves got back into the game following a penalty award and ten minutes from time, a scramble in the Woodman's penalty area ended with the ball in the back of the net. Despite keeping up the pressure, it was not until five minutes into the second period of extra time that the Woodman's got their noses in front again when Geoff Maloney scored on the turn after being set up by Steve Sheridan. Moments later, Sheridan was on the mark again finding the top corner of the net from 25 yards and even though a late goal from Hawes caused a couple of minutes of understandable tension, the Stokesley League side held firm.
