A rising river hit weights on the normally prolific Over Dinsdale match length of the Tees during the Darlington Angling Trophy but there were still four double figured nets before conditions deteriorated.

The result was close and Darlington's Alan Hird edged it by a very tight margin. Staked below the slate beds, feeder and bread produced 11 small chub off peg 75 for 13.2.0.

Quality rather than quantity paid off for Darlington's John Bainbridge who legered meat down the side below donkey wood and 4 chub succumbed totalling 12.15.0 followed by John Hay of Durham 11.8.0.

The Thornaby AA Robert Buttery Memorial on the Croft to Hurworth reaches of the Tees was over before it really got started when just an hour into the contest a tidal wave pushed the level up four foot and the river continued to rise till the end.

That wasn't the end of the drama though as two anglers amazingly broke double figures in the short match but even more surprising they tied on 10.14.0 apiece.

Anthony Smith of Flynn's Tackle legered cheese down the side off peg 47 and quickly pulled out four chub while further downstream on peg 68 towards Hurworth Darlington's Paul Tinkler located six smaller chub in the edge, five on the trusty 'smelly' cheese and the other snatching a piece of meat.

Fishing his dad's memorial match Darlington's John Whitehouse travelled south and was honoured to win the Knaresborough Piscatorials Dick Whitehouse Trophy taming a high river Nidd.

John below the sawmills weir at Scotton drew peg 67 and opting for the stickfloat he took an all grayling net of 7.11.0 catching on maggot and wasp grub hookbaits.

A brace of chub weighing in at 5.9.0 elevated Aireborough's Paul Wood into next slot as one fell to worm and the other maggot both on the bomb from peg 63.

A swollen Ouse offered little chance of big weights for the final match decider of the Yorkshire Winter League staged on the Ouse at Hunters Lodge and Linton.

Anglers from Waterline Wibsey, Hirst Tackle A and Anglers World York all worked like Trojans to accumulate vital points and in the end a single point put Waterline Wibsey beyond the rest on the day and overall. The new title winners will now go forward to the semi final to be held on the same Hunters Lodge and Linton match lengths.

In the individual stakes it was down to Armley's Mick Doyle and remarkably he won it with just one fish, a super bream of 7.0.0 that accepted legered lobworm off peg 290 on the Linton stretch to push aside runner up Castleford 's Wayne Shilloto with 2.9.8.

Top teams on the day: 1 Waterline Wibsey 56; jt 2 Hirst Tackle A & Anglers World York 55; 4 Selby 53.

Final League table: 1 Waterline Wibsey 13 pts; 2 Hirst Tackle A 14; 3 Anglers World York 15; 4 Selby 20; 5 Hirst Tackle B 30; 6 Armley 33; 7 Castleford 41; 8 Marsh Tackle 46.

Bradford No1 AA Open River Nidd at Cowthorpe (50 rods): 1 H Foster (Bradford No 1) 8.0.0 - 2 barbel to bomb and lobworm off peg 28. 2 B Hutchinson (Bradford No 1) 5.7.0; 3 G Cox (Bradford No 1) 3.5.0.

The Ferryhill & District AC Grayling match on the Catterick waters will take place this coming Saturday, January 17. Meet 9am at the Swale Inn and fish from 10am.

Carp Scene

Woodland Lakes Open - Saturday (57 pegs): 1 Sean Cameron (Elton Tackle) 30.14.0 of mainly carp off Kestrel 32 to corn & bomb; 2 Martin Leck (Diawa Goldthorpe) 25.11.0; 3 Daryl Taylor (Diawa Goldthorpe) 21.8.0.

It was barbel galore for Fryston rod winner Mark Stanley when he weighed in 55.12.0 during Sunday's 79 pegger at the Woodlands.

Split between Curlew, Kestrel, Partridge, Skylark and Wagtail lakes Mark drew Kestrel 28 and fishing the maggot feeder got in contact with barbel from the off and other than the occasional small carp interceding, he enjoyed an outstanding session depositing 57 barbel into the net.

On the same lake and in a similar area came runner up Eddie Bridon of Team Shimano Quaker but with a very different catch.

Preferring the bomb and corn approach Eddie bagged two double figured carp off peg 34, which much to his delight accounted for the bulk of his 38.2.0.

At the Oaks Sessay small pastie sized carp made up the winner's net when Oak 's man Bruce Poland collected 33.4.0 to stay in front of the other main contenders, all with twenty something catches.

Deciding to fish over to the island the long pole and maggot brought plenty of bites as fish up to 1.0.0 mark responded.

For John Allerton of Tri Cast Oaks pole and maggot down the middle of the channel proved effective off peg 28 bringing small carp at 7 metres for 26.10.0 enough to nick second place by 2ozs.

Trout news

Redworth's Jubilee Lakes still busy - boasting a rod average of 4.1.

Fishing very well even in the cold windy conditions. Star man of the week Durham's Brian Dawson grassed two superb double figured rainbows of 14.5.0 and 13.3.0 catching one on cat's whisker and the other on stickleback fry.

Best patterns generally throughout the week zonkers, Dawson's olive and cat's whisker.
