A SCIENCE technician had a double celebration on Friday as he retired from his job on his 60th birthday, after 39 years at a secondary school .
Senior science technician, Brian Roberts began work at Carmel RC Technology College in Darlington on his 21st birthday.
The governors, headteacher, and current and former colleagues joined Mr Roberts and his family in a Mass of Celebration.
Among the gifts was a certificate from Bishop Ambrose Griffiths, offering congratulations for all his years' service to Catholic education, as well as a number of gifts from staff and a long service award.
During his time at Carmel, Mr Roberts was involved in many fundraising initiatives.
After the Mass of Celebration he was presented with the Annual Northern Cross Spiritual Award.
The North Cross, a North-East Catholic newspaper, presents the award for a story which best illustrates Gospel values.
Mr Roberts received the award for his work with Operation Joseph, helping under-privileged and destitute children in Romania.
As well as his trips to help children in Romania and Croatia, Mr Roberts has also taken part in every Great North Run since the event began in 1981, and four London marathons to raise money for various charities.
Headteacher James O'Neill said: "Brian has always been very willing to turn his hand to almost anything within college and has become an institution, respected by staff and pupils alike.
"He will be greatly missed, not just because of his commitment to the college, but because of the friendship and support he has given to colleagues."
