A COUNCIL is pushing ahead with plans to combat greenhouse gases by working with the public to become more environmentally friendly.
Middlesbrough produces 800,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas each year, and the borough council wants to cut that figure by 12 per cent by 2010.
A public consultation in the town found council taxpayers want to see more reliance on green methods of producing energy, better recycling facilities and integrated public transport.
Barry Coppinger, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for public protection, said: "We are aiming to develop a series of practical measures to help everyone cause less damage to the environment by saving energy and using it more efficiently.
"We will be producing an action plan making it clear who is responsible for what, and we need a whole town effort to meet the challenge ahead."
